The Science and Art of Psychological Assessment
Conduct psychological assessments that are holistic and link to the best treatment for the cause of problems.
Psychological assessment is the foundation of psychotherapy. This advanced course trains clinicians to conduct a consumer-centred Biopsychosocial Psychological Assessment (BPSA). The course is designed for the clinicians who provide who treat psychological problems. It helps them move beyond labels symptoms to understand and treat the broader drivers of overwhelming distress. By integrating the clinician's knowledge and application of science with the consumer's expertise about their own life, body, needs, and goals, you will learn to build a high-fidelity shared conceptualisation. This consumer-centred approach ensures treatment is precisely tailored to each individual, reducing diagnostic blind spots and creating a foundation for interventions that make lasting improvements to consumer wellbeing.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Understand the BPSA framework and how it overcomes the limitations of traditional, clinician-centred assessment to more effectively identify the drivers of overwhelming distress
- Facilitate a consumer-centred BPSA by integrating the clinician's scientific knowledge with the consumer's unique expertise about their own life, body, needs and goals, using specific consumer-centred assessment strategies
- Develop a collaborative conceptualisation of the problem with consumers, moving beyond labels and symptoms to identify the core drivers of their distress.
- Agree on a treatment plan collaboratively with the consumer, ensuring the intervention is based on the shared conceptualisation and the consumer's specific goals.
